There are several things a person can try to help themselves fall asleep, including herbal teas, aromatherapy, white noise devices, and more. A large meal or strenuous exercise just before bedtime can temporarily boost the body’s metabolism and drive away sleep. Some students only need five hours, others eight hours. Students should get enough sleep at night to stay focused, improve concentration, and improve academic performance.
  • Don’t go to bed hungry or full. In particular, avoid heavy or oversized meals within a few hours of bedtime. The discomfort can keep you awake. Nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol also require caution. The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine wear off after hours and can interfere with sleep, and while alcohol can make you drowsy initially, it can disrupt sleep later in the night.
  • Keep your room cool, dark, and quiet. Exposure to light at night can make it difficult to fall asleep. Avoid prolonged use of light-up screens just before bedtime. Relaxing activities before bed, like taking a bath or using relaxation techniques, can promote better sleep. Limit naps to more than an hour and avoid being late. However, if you work nights, you may need to take a long nap before work to make up for your sleep debt.
  • Regular physical activity can promote better sleep. Write down what’s on your mind and then put it away for tomorrow. Start with the basics of how to organize, prioritize, and delegate tasks. Meditation can also relieve anxiety. Almost everyone has an occasional sleepless night. However, if you frequently have trouble sleeping, consult your doctor.
