Make Your Skin Bulletproof To The Elements

by Robert S. Chancellor

Niacinamide, a type of vitamin B3 that’s increasingly been used in beauty products or sold as a serum with a hint of zinc. This is a must-have ingredient in your skincare routine as highlighted by years of dermatological research.

Where can you find Niacinamide?

Niacinamide can be found in natural products such as meats, and dairy products like milk or eggs. Your body, however, can’t produce this vitamin on its own so supplements and skincare products are an alternative to getting this vitamin B3.

Why use Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is perfect for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin, acne or eczema. This ingredient works hard at creating a protective barrier on the surface of your skin which locks in moisture and hydrates your skin for hours. As it creates a layer of protection this can also help reduce pore sizes, the appearance of wrinkles, and skin texture. It’s a perfect product to apply first thing in harsh winter mornings as your skin battles the elements.

Have a problem with hyperpigmentation? Then a niacinamide serum is perfect for you, this star ingredient also evens out your skin tone. It’s perfect if you have scarring caused by spots or acne by repairing the skin each time you apply the ingredient. The anti-inflammatory purposes can reduce skin irritation and redness in the skin. After four weeks of usage,  you should see a difference in the appearance and feel of your skin.

At what age can I start using niacinamide?

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t add this to your routine. Your mid to late 20’s is a prime time to begin using this product to help prevent aging signs from worsening. It also helps skin appear brighter and fresher. Just remember to use SPF with all your routines to really help protect your skin.

Can you add Niacinamide to your daily skincare routine?

The answer is yes! Topical niacinamide can be incorporated into your routine as easily as buying a new cream. It can be found in many products such as lotions, face masks and serums, just check the ingredients!  It can mostly be used everyday day or night, just check the label of the product you buy. If using a serum, the best way to apply it is after you’ve washed your face and patted it dry. Apply the product on your face and wait up to fifteen minutes for the product to dry and soak into the skin. After this you can apply any additional moisturisers and whatever is usually next in your routine.

You can pair niacinamide with other serums if you’re already using some in your routine. The most compatible ingredients with niacinamide are hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamin C and ceramides. Each of these plays a part in protecting the skin barrier and encouraging the overall health of the skin.

How often should you be using niacinamide?

You can decide how often you wish to use this ingredient over the week, it is a gentle product on the skin. Most use it up to twice a day, fitting it into their morning and night facial routines. This is usually the best frequency to use the ingredient as you’ll see results within a month. Remember, it is gentle on the skin. Ensure you use this after exfoliation and the skin is dry, then apply your usual products after for the optimum results.
